I apologize for the amount of links being thrown out, but due to there being about 11 ‘official’ games worth of canon and history to deal with it is not really easy to summarize in a concise enough manner so that someone not in the fandom will fully get everything that has gone on in regards to history and character interactions. Especially, as there are events that impact the games that are never fully mentioned or are just implied and are usually not in order or as coherent as they could be. A lot of that can be had by the fact that the X series was supposed to end at five games and then go into the Zero series, but CAPCOM got greedy and extended it into three more official games and a side game so continuity got a bit borked. I also admit that there are side games and various other sources that are counted as part of the canon, like drama cds and such, however I have only played the main game lines and thus only use the knowledge those represent in my interpretation and reasoning for how I play X.

*Personality:
X, ah X...where to start? Perhaps far back to when he was first made would be best.

When X was first created he was considered a miracle and marvel in the field of robotics, as he was the first of his kind to actually be given some form of free will and the ability to change and think (Making him not a robot but an android in definition). Not limited by any programing and just as free to make mistakes and do as he decides is best for him and those around him, like any human being with free will and sentience. Though, like humans, when X was ‘born’ he lacked the knowledge and experience to know right from wrong. Which is a dangerous thing, considering X was 'fully grown' and had weaponry and power to cause a lot of damage if he had no moral compass in which to temper his choices and actions on. Which is why X, instead of experiencing life alongside Dr. Light in a time of just acquired peace, X is instead sealed away and while in this sleep mode is put through so many scenarios and tests while he is ‘dreaming’ to train him to have morals and compassion and to allow humanity to grow so as to be more accepting of such a creation to be living with them. A sequence that may have been a bit overly done when the thirty year time period for this is expanded into one hundred years by the Cataclysm. Resulting in over exposure to the various scenarios, and as such creating a truly gentle soul.

For you see, through those hundred years of sleeping and learning, X was molded in such a way as to want to find and follow nonviolent and peaceful solutions for any problem that may arise. While also advocating equality and the advancement of humans and reploids (the name given to the new models of mechanical beings created from the schematics that Dr. Cain was able to reverse engineer from X) coexisting peacefully.

This here sets the foundation of a young and emotional X who, like any young person, is trying to find his place in the world and do what he has to while still being himself. In his case trying to find a peaceful solution to all the fighting, even as he is sent out again and again to fight and kill his fellow reploids. Because of his gentle outlook he also tends to care deeply and becomes emotionally attached easily to those he considers friends and allies. Even his enemies evoke deep emotional reactions from a young X. Which means that there are many times where he suffers a lot of inner conflict and despair that the fighting will never end and that he would one day lose his ability to care about the lives he has to take. At one point he even decides to quit fighting, despite being one of the best fighters and one of three who seemed immune to the Maverick virus because he couldn’t fully deal and cope with the prospect of never seeing an end to this war.

Because X cares so deeply, he also tends to get emotionally hurt easily and deeply as well. His gentleness making him one who easily forgives and willing to go out of the way to help a complete stranger if they are in need. That has backfired on him on a few occasions, where someone he trusts ends up being a Maverick spy or turns on him suddenly. In a positive spin it also makes him a listener and mediator that many young rookie hunters turn to for advice and support, when they are not struck dumb in awe at the legendary S Class Hunter X. He also tends to hide a lot of his negative emotions behind his caring side, especially ones that would cause worry and grief to others around him. Which also makes it that much harder for him to heal in the long run since he bottles so much up until he can't keep a lid on such any longer. Which many speculate was how his sudden departure from the Hunters in 7 happened considering he had just gone through the entire Nightmare episode and finding Zero once again prior to this sudden decision to quit.

However, with the help of Zero, who is arguably his greatest support and is said to be his best friend, he manages to come back and keep fighting even when things just stack themselves against him, and he never gives up. Finally learning and gaining the resolve to realize that he has to fight in order to bring about the peace he desperately wants. A resolve that allows him to finally see the end of the Maverick Wars and still keep going when he is alone and trying to keep the survivors of the Elf Wars alive.

Looping back a bit we'll go a bit into his bond with Zero. While understated in a lot of ways, Zero and X have a friendship that actually defines and creates a lot of the strengths and positive qualities that make X become the leader that is revered, respected, and practically worshiped by the time the events of Megaman Zero happens. Zero was basically X's motivator, support, devil's advocate, and the only one who wouldn't put up with any emotional whiplash that X may dish out. A friendship that X sorely needed even in the beginning of his life when Dr. Cain woke him up, as X likely dealt with many reploids who were awed by him for being the prototype that all other reploids were made from and by humans who saw him as the legacy of the famous Dr. Light, well that is if they were not already scoffing over the fact that the supposed greatest creation of Dr. Light was only able to rank as a B class hunter before Sigma became infected with the Maverick Virus. Add in his rising infamy as one of the greatest Maverick Hunters there is after the betrayal of Sigma and X was likely very isolated in terms of emotional connections that were on an even keel. Then comes along Zero who many are afraid of due to how he was first considered a reformed Maverick, and known as the Red Demon due to his battle prowess.

So here you have two reploids with a lot of expectations and responsibility thrust on them, who are not really just like other reploids and you have the start of what will become the only lasting piece of sanity in a world gone completely insane. Zero was the one constant in X's life, even during the times when it seemed as if Zero had died, as he always seemed to return just when X needed him to the most. Zero was both a support and a guiding hand that would make X walk on his own when it was needed. All while pushing him to be as good as he had the potential to be. In many ways the unlimited potential that Dr. Light saw in X was coaxed out by both the hardships of the time and the seemingly casual efforts of Zero.

This is especially poignant when Zero seals himself away to be studied in order for scientists to find a cure for the Maverick virus and have it flushed from his systems, as Zero is the original carrier of it, leaving X alone to watch out for and protect everyone. A feat that is already hard and draining for any person as the world is basically reduced to one livable area with strife and shortages on everything running rampant. Leaving X as the only thing keeping it all together with no one there to help him stay together, and even when Zero does wake up once more it’s without memories and so the friendship strengthened and tested by hardship and time may as well not exist. Especially, as X becomes the support and motivator to Zero during the entire resistance against Neo Arcadia.

X is a gentle soul, that through so much being done to him has found a strength that allows him to fight for what he wishes to protect while still keeping his kindness and love of all those who allow him to care about them. In a much kinder universe he could easily be a caretaker or teacher, or any number of roles where patience and peaceful approaches are required for success. Coupled with determination that has allowed him to keep going for over three hundred years and a desire to see peace for all those around him he does embody many of the qualities that we wish for in our heroes. Even as the realities around him begin to change him from what he was as a reploid fighting the Maverick Wars into the quiet and resigned Cyber elf we meet when Zero awakens a century after he was put to sleep.

A century for the bright, determined, optimistic at times, leader to be slowly eroded and worn down by the loss of everyone he knew (As though it is never really mentioned, it is heavily implied that every named reploid from the X series barring X and Zero were killed somehow during the Maverick and Elf Wars.) is gone and those left behind desperately need him to sacrifice everything of himself to keep them alive and going. Putting him upon a pedestal far higher and grander than the one he was placed on as a Maverick Hunter and Dr. Light and Dr. Cain’s greatest hope. Even with all of this X didn’t break as many others would have and he again shows how much he puts everyone else before himself when he gives up his own body to become a Cyber Elf and seal away the Dark Elf within Yggdrasil.

Humans have a bad habit of making heroes out to be perfect, and thus never realizing even an advance reploid/android like X is far from perfect.

For you see, what many didn’t take into account once Zero went into his deep sleep and X was put in charge of the last large settlement of human life, was that a lot of the strength that X had was due to the support he had during the Maverick wars. A support system that had many who still recalled his time as a hesitant B rank rookie hunter and how much he went through and lost during the rise and fall of Sigma, instead of just seeing X the legend. Instead, he was pretty much alone and considered the only hope left for the group now in his care as most of earth was unlivable for organic life. Even a hero needs a support system and in such an environment it is not that unthinkable to realize even X would break under it all trying to be Atlas.

During the time between the end of the Elf Wars and the beginning of Zero’s reawakening the stress and entirety of it all eroded little by little at the very foundation of what made X who he is. Mainly his ability to still mourn and feel for everyone, even those he would have to fight and kill. Running a city and trying to keep the peace all on his own slowly started to make him finally become numb to such things. He was starting to lose his pacifism like empathy for his fellow reploids when they would go Maverick. It was not fully taken from him, but, it was the biggest sign in his finally realizing how tired he was of everything and that there was now a new fear within him that he would lose his caring completely if this was to continue.

It makes his decision to use his own body to seal away the Dark Elf in Yggdrasil not as selfless as it appears on the surface in this light.

That doesn’t mean that he has fully lost his empathy and wish to help everyone that he can during the events of the Zero series. He has just become more decisive and worn out in the grand scheme of things. Losing a bit of the broadcasted emotions and excited speech of his Hunter days, seeming (since the Zero series is text based with no voice acting) to take a more sedated and calm tone and pace of words and advice. His time as a cyber elf has also allowed him to show his more motherly parental side to other reploids. Caring for and helping as much as he can with the resistance, and then with Zero when he awakens in ways that he would not have been able to when he was a Maverick Hunter. A side he never really was able to show before due to the Maverick Wars, despite being basically the ‘father’ of all reploids.

X is as complicated as any human, more so when once takes into account the three hundred years of life he has lead giving him experiences and time most humans would never gain, and though many would wonder what he would have made of the world once Weil had been destroyed. No one can truly blame his likely relief of being able to let go. Nor can anyone say that even in those last moments that his heart was not fully set on protecting those who he had always protected, even when he passed such on to Zero. X has become many things during his life and in many ways the saying a still pond runs deep is a good way to convey such if one needs to be brief.

*Powers/Abilities:
Oh boy this is where we get into speculation territory.

First off what is a Cyber Elf? From the Megaman Wikia "Each Cyber-elf is a sentient computer program created with pure energy and made in a physical image of an elf, and notwithstanding some highly advanced exceptions works by fusing with a reploid to enhance their abilities or provide temporary benefits (such as healing, providing cover fire and such). As Cyber-elves get stronger, they become more human in appearance, while looking like small blobs while weak.

However, many Cyber-elves can only be used once since their energy is depleted upon activating their ability. Since their bodies are made of energy, this results in the death of those Cyber-elves, who disappear and cannot be revived, making the ethics in their use questionable.

The Cyber-elves function by interacting with Cyberspace, a parallel world where everything in the "real" world (referred to as "substance world") exists in the form of a program. A Cyber-elf manifests its power by altering the program of Cyberspace, causing changes to the substance world. It is through this process that Cyber-elves can accomplish feats such as increasing a Reploid's power, repairing damage, or even environmental changes such as the removal of local hazards or the transformation of certain Mechaniloids.

Also, since they are living data, Cyber-elves can be transferred and downloaded through devices such as Trans Servers."

TL;DR X went from a Badass Maverick Hunter Reploid and all the special awesome sauce things that come with it,including the gamehacks that only title characters get to well...to being CAPCOM's grimdark answer to Transformers Armada's minicons.

Luckily, X is still a special snowflake and plot pivotal character for the three games he is in. So he gets to be somewhat different from his new brethren.

--From what is seen in canon X has held physical objects in safekeeping even though he is pure data. As seen when he gave Zero back his Z-saber so he likely has a bit more oomph in regards to dealing with the substance world then other Cyber Elves. (Or it means he can manipulate the programs in such a way that the sword was held in like hammer space or such and he just clicked the open command when it was time. It is never explained okay)

--X has bounced himself in and around the everywhere via networks, so traveling through whatever energy waves make up communication lines is pretty easy for him.

--Because he is a special snowflake ball of data X likely also has hacking capabilities, considering I don't think Neo Arcadia has an open ID router running everything and all. He has to conveniently appear for plot reasons in high security places somehow okay.

--Being a Cyber Elf X pretty much has two forms that he flip flops between depending on how poignant or mysterious he is trying to be. One of them is the flickering semitransparent form like in the icon above (though the flickering can be dealt with by the Lambda so people can actually see him properly or such, just saying) and that of a little floating spark ball of energy with colored data circling it. (Like this icon here) His "normal" appearance is also quite tiny, maybe a foot at most in height (It's hard to tell because Gameboy Advance graphics and he likes to float okay) and despite some elves getting a bit ridic in height when they evolve that is not really the norm and so likely it's a survival instinct since you don't have to expend as much of your life to make yourself look bigger. (Since he did appear normal size in one scene but most of the time he is tiny fairy boy)

--It is implied that X has a bit more in the ways of energy then the run of the mill elves. (Considering he is only a fifth of his own soul because the other four pieces were used to create the four Guardians of Neo Arcadia, that kinda says a lot) so he likely can do some small scale cyber elf things without killing himself. Considering that when he fades away at the end of MMZ3 it was after he likely did something to help Zero defeat Omega that was stupidly heroically sacrificing without telling anyone he was doing it. So he likely can give a small boost now and again to a mechanical individual and then like coma sleep in the internet for a few weeks.

--Being nothing more then concentrated energy means that there are a lot of things that could ruin his day out there. Like EMP blasts, mad scientists making new energy devouring things, ending up in the wrong channel while going for a walk and being horribly scarred, antivirus programs...you get the idea.

*Inventory: Himself and the data clothes on his back (Does the data halo and data wings count as clothing or part of him :la)
*Starting Polarity: I am awful at these so I leave this up to the Mods.

If AU, how does your character differ from canon?: N/A

Final Notes:
I understand that being pretty much having no solid state could hinder cr and interactions, but not having a body, reploid or organic, has had an impact on how he acts and is. His canon has shown that it doesn't really impede him in moving about and interacting so he's not stuck inside a terminal or such and in need of another to move him about, and if it really is a problem it seems to be slightly inferred that elves can be at least partially solid and touchable for a small amount of time and am willing to go that route. I mostly fight him getting a new body because of the fact that he literally is only 1/5 of a soul now and I don't want to just do a few flashy handwaves of scifi magic to explain why such doesn't bother him at all in having a normal form again.
